We all know that recycling has a huge impact on the environment and Mother Earth but with just a little bit of effort and a few changes around the house, your family can really make a difference.
To celebrate Earth Day I’m sharing 5 easy green tips that our family has implemented to help reduce our carbon footprint. I’d love to hear your tips and tricks too. Comment and let me know what you’re doing to celebrate Earth Day!
Make Your Own Household Cleaner: I promise, making household cleaners will not only will reduce all those nasty and harmful chemicals your family inhales PLUS save a ton of cash, the satisfaction of making your cleaners is incredibly rewarding.
When we sold our home I was proud to let the new owners who are expecting their first child, know that we were chemical free! My go-to recipe guide is Homemade Cleaners: Quick-and-Easy, Toxin-Free Recipes to Replace Your Kitchen Cleaner, Bathroom Disinfectant, Laundry Detergent, Bleach, Bug Killer, Air Freshener, and more.
Even my cleaning lady prefers my DIY version to store brands.
Switch to Glass Containers: We switched out 99% of our plastic containers to glass about two years ago and never looked back. Glasslock is my favorite brand that holds up extremely well, available in the perfect 18 piece starter kit. Oven, microwave and dishswasher safe and comes in a variety of sizes.
Stainless Steel Cups: The day we threw out all those plastic sippy cups was liberating. If you’re child is under the age of three I know your cupboard is filled with miscellaneous lids, cups and straws. The girls love these stainless steel tumbler cups (8 oz) – perfect for tiny hands. Easy to handle on their own and they keep cold beverages chilled.
Eco Friendly Straws: Can we all agree plastic straws are terrible? They can’t go in the dishwasher or they melt or release toxic chemicals which makes them almost impossible to clean and who knows about Stainless Steel Drinking Straws from CocoStraw made with 18/10 Stainless Steel these won’t rust, scratch, chip or break and comes with a cleaning brush. We haven’t had to use the brush ever because these straws clean so easily.
Green Lunches: I’m obsessed with stainless steel food containers and reuseable bags. Planetbox is a little more pricey but comes with a stainless steel lunchbox, 2 round lidded containers; a soft carry bag, and set of hip magnets. Both are made from safe, non-toxic, and recycled materials – no lead, PVC, phthalates, or BPA.
I just discovered a line of bright colorful lunch bags from Lunchskins that are dishwasher-safe, certified food-safe, quick-drying, grease-proof, moisture-proof, lead-free, bpa-free, and phthalate-free.
