Eight years ago when I was a soon-to-be mom, preggors with my first child, I met Sarah Davis while interviewing kickstarter campaign today. We’re thrilled to support her new venture and share her story with you!
Chatting with Sarah Davis Co-Founder Citizen Smalls
So Chic Mom: Sarah Davis
So Chic Kids: Davis (9), Maeve (7), Remy (5)
Occupation: Owner of Olive.You.Nanny and Co- owner of Citizen Smalls
About Sarah: Born in the Midwest, lover of Chicago, 3 crazy kiddos, living in Austin and thriving on chaos! I started my first company, Olive You Nanny when I was 24 and now co-owner of a new adventure, Citizen Smalls.
SLC: What is one thing most people don’t know about you?
SD: I’m very sarcastic and curse like a sailor, oh wait, everyone knows that.
SLC: You’ve been a successful entrepreneur for many years. What inspired you to launch a second business?
SD: I moved from Chicago to Austin, my kids were all in school full time and I wanted a passion project. I knew I wanted to move into the direction on kids apparel. I started off slowly and found myself with the most amazing team! I wasn’t completely sure how big I wanted to go but found an amazing partner (Nicole Locke) and incredible illustrator (Stephanie Jimenez) and now the sky is the limit.
SLC: As a mom of three young children, how do you manage to run a successful business and home? What’s your secret to balance?
SD: Here is the secret….don’t have playdates at your house unless it’s a cleaning lady day! People often ask my how I manage everything and the truth is, I’m really good at being a mom and a business owner but fall short with laundry, grocery shopping and remembering kids appointments! I called Instacart last night for Motrin. Seriously people. Planning ahead is not my thing.
SLC: What are 3 tips for other aspiring mom entrepreneurs you can share?
- Multi-tasking is key. One minute I’ll be interviewing a nanny and the next picking up patterns from our factory and then going to grab a kid from the nurses office. You need to turn off and on every aspect of your life in a second and move onto the next.
- Support. You’ll need it. Both from the business world and from your family.
- Stick with it. You’ll have good days and bad, just keep going and believe in yourself.
SLC: What has been the biggest challenge for you in business? How did you overcome and keep going?
SD: Stress of making everyone happy! I’ve come to the realization it’s not possible. You’ll have clients you love and clients you don’t love and you can only do the best you can.
SLC: What can we expect to see from your new business this year?
SD: A lot!! We launch our kickstarter on November 12th. Once we get funded we will go into production. And we already have a spring line in the works, so stay tuned for that!
SLC: What’s your “secret” to being So Chic?
SD: You’ll never see me in Yoga pants. (Unless I’m at the gym.) When you look good, you feel good. I also enjoy what I do. No need in wasting time not being happy.
SLC: What is your guilty pleasure when you get a little coveted “me” time?
SD: Gossip magazine, good beer and a piece of Vosges chocolate!
