Bravo TV premiered its new show Pregnant in Heels last week to 530,000 viewers. At first glance it looked like the crazy train had left the station but after giving it a chance, I found it highly entertaining and amusing. Is this everyone’s pregnancy experience? Probably not, but who am I to judge over the top parents who hire a maternity concierge?
I completely understand the desire to look and feel fabulous while being pregnant and the show reminded me of what I did to prepare for the births of my two sassy kids. Some may perceive this as being vain, I say it’s all about being sassy!
5 Simple Ways to Look & Feel Fab in the Delivery Room
1.Hair & Makeup – Lessons learned after sassy kid #1. I look back at photos from my first delivery and have no idea what I was thinking. Not all women have an afterglow and need a little help. Do yourself a big favor. Pack your makeup bag and hair products and use them both. Mascara, concealer and lip gloss go a long way in any situation (labor included). Schedule haircuts and color at least ten days prior to your due date.
2. Wardrobe– Another lesson learned after seeing photos of myself in a tattered hospital gown with #1. So NOT sassy! Stylish maternity gowns are worth every penny. I wore mine after delivery, during my hospital stay and several weeks at home.
3.Paparazzi– Capturing the perfect photo was the furthest from my mind with #1 which I totally regret. Second time around I scheduled a photographer to come to my delivery room the day after giving birth. Chicago family photographer Julia Franzosa recommends confirming your photo session BEFORE giving birth and schedule within 10 days of your due date. This is the perfect way to capture those sweet newborn pictures you will cherish for years to come.
4.Rejuvenate – For both deliveries I scheduled a massage therapist to come to my hospital room for a post natal massage. It was the best gift I gave my body after the trauma of a C-Section and was less expensive than going to the spa. Contact your local spa and ask if any of their therapists provide pre and post natal therapy outside their location or find a mobile spa in your area. I took it one step further and brought in a nail technician too!
5.Bump Up Your Room – A sassy mom-to-be needs to be relaxed and comfortable in the delivery room. Bring an IPOD loaded with favorite tunes (Enya is amazing for relaxation), an aromatherapy reed diffuser, magazines, snacks, and don’t forget a bed sheet and pillow from home. If I can give moms-to-be any advice on what to pack no matter where you are delivering, it would be the diffuser oil and a bed sheet and pillow from home. Reed diffusers can create an environment of feelings that changes from one space to another. Choose a scent that will remind you of being relaxed, cheerful and happy! Trust me on this one. Your pillow and bed sheet from home? That’s a priceless tip I picked up from The Girlfriends’ Guide to Pregnancy: Or everything your doctor won’t tell you by Vicki Iovine.

I haven’t seen and episode yet, I’ve got to find out what this trend is all about. I hope they are helping moms feel inner beauty–not the need to go crazy during pregnancy.

First episode was a little over the top, 2nd more low key. The message boards on Bravo seem to be more concerned about Rosie’s unusual accent rather than the crazy things the parents are doing like organizing a focus group to select their baby’s name. Will be interesting to see if it becomes a hit or one season wonder.
