This month Orange is the New Black season two premiered on Netflix. Apparently I’ve been living under a rock and paid no attention to this show until my girlfriend asked me if I was watching it.
Having no idea what it was about, she proceeds to describe it like this…
“It’s about a women who goes to prison for a crime she committed in her twenties. It would be like if one of our us (our friends) went to jail for something stupid we did at that age”.
Of course the trials and tribulations of my own twenties briefly crossed my mind. Yes, there are a few things in my past that may or may not have resulted in jail time. (Just kidding…)
The main character is like us? This may be a little extreme but definitely sounded intriguing. Much more interesting than watching a show solely based on female criminals.
As a member of Netlix’s Stream Team I decided to take advantage of my membership and binge watch Orange is the New Black Season One. This took me precisely two nights and staying up until 4 am.
The minute I saw the creator was Jenji Kohan the creator of the Showtime comedy-drama Weeds, I knew this was going to be good. The main character – Piper Chapman’s wild past comes back to haunt her, resulting in her arrest and detention in a federal penitentiary. Could you even imagine??
Piper is required to trade her comfortable New York life for an orange prison jumpsuit and finds unexpected conflict and camaraderie amidst an eccentric group of inmates.
I was addicted after the first episode. An hour long commercial-free show – what’s not to love?? I cry, I laugh – it’s an emotional roller coaster!
What keeps you engrossed are the intermittent flashbacks of each prisoner’s life before ending up in the slammer. You really become fascinated by each character individually. I can’t remember the last time I watched any scripted show where I was genuinely interested in each and every character.
Now that your favorite shows are on hiatus, Netflix has a selection of titles to get you through the summer months. And yes, that includes all-new episodes of my favorite Netflix original — Orange Is the New Black season 2.
Last night I finished watching all 13 episodes, now I’m off to check out Breaking Bad!
