Having children never intimidated me in the slightest. During my first pregnancy I proudly announced to anyone that asked, “I’ve been around babies my entire life. Babies don’t scare me”.
Turns out although I had been babysitting since the age of twelve, I had absolutely NO experience with newborns. That would have been nice to know. Supervising someone else’s children for a few hours sporadically over the course of 25 years does not necessarily qualify as having motherhood experience.
Husband and I gave serious consideration to adding a second child to our family. After sassy kid #1, we realized our strengths. Energy and age were not on our side.
We polled our friends and family members who assured us that going from one to two would be challenging but manageable. We must have blocked out what people were telling us because having two is ten times more overwhelming than either of us anticipated.
Personally, it is not just the number of children but their individual personalities that can throw you for a loop. It never crossed our minds that sassy kid #2 would be louder, more aggressive, more stubborn or way more energetic than #1. She is the love of my life but sometimes she can wear me out. I think I’m more worried about what’s to come.
There are MANY things I wish someone would have told me before I before baby, however if I knew everything I may have been too scared to become a mother. Maybe it’s better not to know too much because it allows you to learn as you go. Isn’t that what makes the best moms anyway?
