I shared a few weeks ago that I was planning my youngest daughter’s 1st cupcakes that we would be dealing with the police appearing on our doorstep.
Yes. It really happened.
The celebration began at 3:30 pm with a pool party on our front sidewalk with a kiddie pool and water table for the kids, cooler with beer and benches for the parents. Appetizers of salsa, guacamole and chips were served along with a full hosted bar including my Sassy Mom’s Spiced Tea.
As much as I love living in the city it means no back or front yard. We are extremely fortunate because a ton couples our age with young children reside on our block. The kids all play together and we spend a great deal of time socializing on the sidewalk in front of our condos, going in and out of everyone’s units. When the weather is nice, this makes a great place for hosting parties.
Around 5:30 pm the party moved inside our condo where we served a Chicago themed menu of chocolate cupcake.
Or so we thought…
As the party was winding down, my friend advised me that some lady was at our door extremely upset. I won’t go into all the details to protect the privacy of our crazy ass neighbors who are obviously not in their right minds. Let’s just say crazy lady(who does not physically reside in our building) was upset that our guests were freely entering and exiting the building from our front sidewalk to our personal unit (which is literally 5 steps from the front door of the building).
When and why the cops were called is somewhat unclear. I guess my efforts to avoid an unnecessary confrontation by shutting the door, pushed her over the edge. Look, when 30 people are in your house that probably isn’t the best time to rationalize with a belligerent stranger.
Needless to say my husband and I along with all our guests were shocked when the police car arrived. The look on the officer’s face when she walked inside and realized it was a birthday party for a one year old was pretty damn funny.
The police ladies who handled the call were awesome and entertained the kids by flashing their lights and running the siren. After spending time with our disgruntled neighbor, they were able to calm her down and all ended well. It was pretty ridiculous and I still can’t believe it happened. However, seeing the look on crazy’s face when the officers left with cupcakes in hand. Priceless.
It did get me to thinking and prompted me to share this party planning tip….. Always invite your neighbors. Maybe (and hopefully) they will let their relatives know what’s up while visiting.
Guests were asked to bring a gently used toy in lieu of gifts to donate to Second Chance Toys.

Ha, this is my favorite picture from the party. The officer was hesitant but we told her immediately after that this was going on Facebook!!

How funny! We used to have a saying “Just don’t do anything that would get into the newspaper”.
