I am so excited for summer!! After six years my bike has come out of retirement and we added a new family member; the Burley Bee bike trailer. At the resistance of my husband, I decided to take the plunge and purchase for the kids.
Has it really been six long years since I rode my bike? Wow. It was beyond nerve racking taking that first spin around the block. As the saying goes, you never forget how to ride a bike and within a few days it was like old times.
Being carless in the city, my bike became the primary mode of transportation our first 4 years in Chicago. Navigating around town on two wheels, I learned to drive defensively and avoid crazy cab drivers. Once I became pregnant, so long bike and off to the garage to collect dust it went.
Many parents attach their kids to a bike seat, but I was never comfortable and way too fearful. I can envision myself losing balance and down we go with a baby strapped in. No thank you. Now that the sassy kids are 4 and 2, I decided we needed an option to explore beyond our neighborhood this summer without having to purchase a car.
After conducting extensive research for months and speaking to several Burley owners, I took the plunge and purchased the Burley Bee bike trailer yesterday from Village Cycle. I wish I had done this two years ago!!
My girls loved it as we took our initial spin around the neighborhood. It took a few minutes to get the hang of it, but after that off we went. I can’t say enough about the staff at Village Cycle in Chicago. They put together the Burley, serviced my bike, helped me load the girls and provided detailed instructions on to attach and remove. They even watched the girls while I took a test spin to get the hang of it.
Sassy Mom Loves:
- Storage space – we threw in 2 Kickboard USA scooters from the bike shop to home. Later that evening we loaded it with beach towels, a Tuffo blanket, on the Go Potty, food and water bottles.
- Folds– folds and flattens for easy storage; front-to-rear fold-flat design
- Weight – it is extremely lightweight (only 20 lbs). Was easy to pull on and off the bike
- Capacity – fits one or two kids up to 100 pounds
- Secure – has a five-point safety harness and protective roll cage
Late afternoon we took our new Burley to the beach for a picnic. I unhitched from my bike and easily pulled it to the water through the sand. All the girls talked about this morning was the Burley, wanting to know when they can take another ride.
Big thank you to Village Cycle and their knowledgeable staff!!! Hands down the Burley Bee is a summer gear must-have.
Do you own a bike trailer? What do you like about it?

Thanks for the inspiring post. I’m looking to buy a trailer for my kids, also 2 and 4, and I wonder what you think about the size of this one – I’ve read that it is small and my kids are big for their age (around 33 and 42 lbs.). How big are your kids? Do you think they’ll fit next year? Thanks for the insight!

You are so welcome! I would definitely find a local dealer and test it out. My kids are small and they don’t seem to mind being close together. My plan is to eventually just use with my youngest and have the oldest ride her bike. I have a feeling it may only get us through this summer with both of them in the Burley. Hope this helps!
