It may sound selfish but nothing sounds more appealing to me than whisking husband away to the Caribbean for a week of sun, water, spa, cocktails, sleep and wait for it….No Kids!
In a few weeks I will be turning 40 and decided to celebrate the milestone by treating myself and husband to a vacation. A real vacation which consists of sleeping as late as possible and no one is up before the sun demanding breakfast and Mickey Mouse.
Originally I had plans of hosting a big “surprise” birthday bash for myself in a fabulous downtown venue, hiring a band (in my dreams it was Dave Matthews) and inviting friends and family. Sounds completely self-indulgent (totally) but it is my 40th and you know how I love to host a great party.
So what changed my mind? Basically our first family “vacation” to Colorado over Christmas. Don’t get me wrong, I love to travel and love my sassy girls and the entire trip was amazing, however three days in we realized there is nothing relaxing about traveling with small kids. We needed a vacation just to recover!
Word of advice, traveling to a cold destination with children under the age of 4 is beyond difficult. By the time you get dressed to leave the house you’re exhausted. Not to mention taking a 3.5 and 16 month old (in the mid stages of potty training) to a public restroom dressed head to toe in winter gear becomes a full on debacle.
Needless to say I am more than excited as I dust off our passports and pack my bag with swimsuits, sundresses, and flip flops. Do I feel guilty? Nope, not at all. While this is our first time being away from the kids for more than a few hours, I know how important it is for parents to make time for themselves.
I’m looking forward to reconnecting with husband, sleeping late and being completely lazy!
