With so many sassy moms inspiring us around the city, we felt it was about time we started shining a big, bright spotlight on someone special each month. We are excited to launch our monthly Sassy Mom Spotlight! This month we selected Sarah Cobb because she embodies the true definition of a Sassy Mom (She is chic, intelligent and in-the-know. The kind of woman who embraces, admires, respects and opens her heart to other moms. But above all, she is surviving motherhood with sophistication and style – occasionally in stilettos!)
Children: Avery – 4 years old
Occupation: Executive Director for Neighborhood Parents Network of Chicago (NPN)
A little about Sarah: Born and raised in NY and came out to Chicago for college. She worked at PwC and Goldman Sachs for 10 years before taking the plunge into parenthood. After her daughter Avery was born and became the center of her universe, Sarah joined NPN and left the corporate world. “I would not have survived my daughter’s sleepless nights, endless spit up, & pacifier addiction without my NPN New Moms Group. I signed on as NPN’s Executive Director in 2009 and found the perfect balance of what I love with a WAH flexible schedule. In my “free” time, you will find me running at the lakefront training for the Oct. marathon!”
SMITC Interview with Sarah:
1. What is one thing most people don’t know about you? If you met me 15 years ago while I was at Northwestern you would have found me running late across campus from my sorority house to my engineering classes. My undergrad degree is in industrial engineering! Really? What was I thinking.
2. What is your secret to staying Sassy? One date night a month and time for regular GNO’s!
3. What would we be surprised to find in your purse? A stash of kid snacks and NPN bookmarks
4. What’s your favorite place to shop in the city? My regular haunts are Anthropologie (Southport Corridor) and DLR Clothing & Accessories (Lincoln Square)
5. What’s your must have beauty product that you can’t live without? The trifecta: Laura Mercier lip gloss, Laura Mercier Secret Concealer, & Fresh Sugar lip treatment.
6. What is your guilty pleasure when you get a little coveted ‘me’ time? Depending on my mood and the weather – a yoga class or really bad t.v. and dark chocolate hershey kisses.
7. What are your 3 tips for navigating the city with kids?
1) when they are young (or at least while you can keep them in a stroller) plan a new walking/bus/train adventure every week to a new neighborhood, park, or restaurant
2) new moms groups and play groups – find a great group of parents to explore with – it is hard to try something new on your own – find a gang to do it with
3) be ready for the ups and downs – go places with easy to find bathrooms, pack great snacks and toys, and don’t worry if your kid has a meltdown – we’ve all been there
